About Us

By Jamila (Salahuddin) Rahman(C70) and Humayoun Jawaid Ahmed(C70) ... July 10, 2016

We owe the inspiration of these web pages to the Yahoo Group Site NED Engineering College Class of 1966-70 which has been around for over 3 years. The group was created by Oostur Raza (M70) and, with support from our 1966-70 Mechanical Engineering contingent, the group site has become an indispensable means of communication and sharing.

Both of us - Jamila (Salahuddin) Rahman (C70) and Humayoun Jawaid Ahmed (C70) joined the Yahoo group site a few months ago and established contact with each other 46 years since our graduation from NED. Our discussions were dominated by musings about our fellow graduates. For some reason, the Yahoo group site had not caught on with the Civil Engineering NED class of 1970 and there was very limited information about them. As we started tracking the CE's, the importance of collecting the information and organizing it in a clear, consistent, accessible, and search-engines-friendly format became evident, and the idea of these web pages took root.

Just as our quest began, we received a picture from Fareeda (Ali) Javed (E70) which really fired us up. The picture showed a small group of our 1966-70 alumni sitting around a coffee table at the alumni reunion held in Karachi in April, 2016. On the table laid an enlarged picture of the Civil Engineering class taken in 1970. We could recognize ouselves and a few others in the poster. First copies of this group photo received in response to our request lacked the clarity needed. When we tracked down Salahuddin M Shaikh (C70) , he sent us an image of the group photo scanned at high resolution and showing the faces and the names printed under the picture very clearly. The image helped us immensely in recalling the forgotten faces and names. Around the same time, we established contact with another classmate, Hanif M Karim (C70) who not only assisted us in connecting with other classmates, but also sent us his copy of the 1970 edition of NED's annual magazine "The Young Engineer" which became a source of several images posted on these pages. We were also getting invaluable help from Zahid Butt (M70) and Pat Mehraban Irani (M70). The momentum picked up and we started making increasingly more contacts. Khalid Tanwir Choudhary (C70) of Calgary, Canada, became another precious source of not just information about the whereabouts of our classmates but also several pictures taken in 1970. When we connected with Abdul Muqtadir (C70) he provided us several other names and contacts which tremendously helped in filling in some of the gaps.

Our very initial focus was on the Civil Engineering 1970 graduates, but we quickly realized that it would be an incomplete story without our other fellow graduates. Our memories and experiences are shared across all 3 disciplines. By late July, 2016 we should have the info on the Civil Engineering graduates in adequately acceptable shape so we can turn our attention to the other two disciplines and start gathering the pictures and information with the same vigor. This is very much a collaborative effort. Pieces of information, seemingly small or insignificant, collectively become a bigger story - one that is our story.

We see these pages as an extension to the Yahoo Group Site NED Engineering College Class of 1966-70 which allows spontaneous conversations, communications, and sharing. These pages enforce an organization and a structure that compliments the group site. As we expand our contacts, we will continue encouraging membership in the Yahoo group site.

At the beginning of this effort, we considered placing these pages on their own domain. We deliberately opted for a more practical route. The SEO (Search Engine Optimization) technology has become increasingly sophisticated. As of now, pages on a new domain get a low ranking. The domain where we are currently sited has been around for almost 2 decades, and this should shorten the time involved before the search engines start picking us up. Once these pages gain the needed ranking we can move them to a new domain without incurring any negative impact.
